he founder and director of P.O.W.E.R., Dr. Kevin Roberts, is a disabled clinical psychologist with more than 30 years of experience providing psychological help for people with disabilities. His broad experiences as a caregiver, teacher, volunteer, and disabled person make him uniquely suited to this calling.

Dr. Roberts received his undergraduate education at Kean College of New Jersey and earned his master’s and doctoral degrees from West Virginia University. While pursuing his education, he served as an instructor and as a counselor to students with disabilities. He established a private practice in Houston, Texas, in 1975.

Dr. Roberts has been actively involved in education, research, service and mental health care in a variety of roles. He served as an intern, postdoctoral fellow, director of day treatment, research coordinator, and consultant for the Texas Research Institute of Mental Sciences. He taught at the University of Houston and UH–Clear Lake and directed the UH Psychological Research and Services from 1986 until 1991. He was a consultant for the Texas Institute for Rehabilitation and Research (TIRR) and the local psychological consultant for the Texas Rehabilitation Commission.

In 1998, Dr. Roberts hosted “The Disability Coach” radio show on KILT–AM. He has appeared on television and in print and enjoys popularity as a speaker. He has also served as an expert witness and trial consultant for psychological issues.

Dr. Roberts is a bilateral, above-the-knee amputee as a result of an automobile accident in December 1965. He has built upon his perspective as a disabled person, learning the perspectives of a professor, counselor, clinical supervisor, volunteer, consultant, board member, commissioner, husband, and father.
